What to Pack for Baby's First Day Out

The day when you first step out with your baby should be so awesome but can also be emotional and downright scary. Pretty soon you'll be heading out without a care but for the first day out with a newborn there are quite a few things to think about.

Where to go

For the very first trip, it might be sensible to stay close to home, and to avoid too much noise and too many people. Partly as you will feel understandably anxious, and also because initially babies' immune systems can be delicate. A local park can be a good option, but it is sensible to make sure that you can turn back if you start to feel overwhelmed.

Who to go with

Of course you could go out and face the new world alone, but sharing this big day with your partner/spouse is super special if that is possible. Your mum or a friend are also good options. Having a co-pilot for the first flight is definitely sensible if you are still feeling fragile after the birth.

When to go

The best answer is, when you feel ready. There are no rules. On the day it makes sense to go soon after a feed and have a glance at the weather to check it is not about to pour down.

As for what to take, everyone has a view, and ours is in the list below. Use this packing checklist to make sure you have all the essentials. Our list for what to take for baby's first day out has checkboxes for using online, or you can download and print a copy.
